Denison Forum on Truth and Culture: newsletter

Message from Jim

I have placed this statement where I can see it every day:

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter
-- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In February 2009 God led Jeff Byrd and me to launch the Denison Forum on Truth and Culture. Our mission from the beginning has been to engage contemporary issues with biblical truth, seeking to help Christians change their culture for God's Kingdom.

We began with no offices, three donors, and 7,000 subscribers to the Cultural Commentary. How gracious God has been! We have grown to more than 80,000 subscribers in 181 countries. Our writings have appeared in Christianity Today, The Christian Post, Huffington Post Live, The Dallas Morning News, and in a variety of other publications and websites. We produce cultural and discipleship resources for partners around the world. And it has been my privilege to speak to over 150,000 people in eight countries. To support this growth, our ministry team has grown to nine full-time and three part-time staff members.

I thank God each morning for the privilege of sharing his truth with our readers. I know that time is your most precious commodity and am grateful for every moment you invest with us.

As we look to the future, it seems clear that the need to speak biblical truth to our culture will be even greater. Is our society is growing closer to God, or further from him? Are you encouraged about our moral direction, or troubled by it? As Moses made his final address to the nation of Israel, he exhorted the people:

Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day, so that you may command your children to obey carefully all the words of this law. They are not just idle words for you—they are your life. By them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess (Deuteronomy 32:46-47).

To live a life God can bless, we must know and obey his word and will. So must our nation.

In coming months, we will announce a variety of new resources designed to help you change your culture for the Kingdom even more effectively. New worship materials will help you spend time alone with God; new biblical commentaries will help you understand and apply his word to your life and world. We are looking forward to more live forums about the issues of the day, in person and online. A redesigned website will help you find what you need more quickly.

Thank you for reading and sharing our work, and for praying for us. I have never been so excited about the future of our ministry, and am deeply grateful to the One who called us and empowers all we do. Statesman Benjamin Disraeli advised: "Nurture your mind with great thoughts; to believe in the heroic makes heroes."

May we be heroes for God's Kingdom together.

Jim Plummer is president of U-Fix-It Appliance Parts, and an avid reader of the Cultural Commentary. Over a year ago, he and his wife, Sharon, felt the call to turn their checkout counter at all three stores into a ministry opportunity. Each morning, the shop prints out the Cultural Commentary with a call to subscribe at, and links to our Facebook and Twitter pages.

In a recent email, Mr. Plummer shared that the Cultural Commentary "has sponsored countless discussions and debates among customers and among employees. Your essays have helped us in our effort to redefine our corporate culture to let the leadership of Christ shine through in all that we do. Each store starts their day printing and displaying the essays. The task is sponsoring a moment where people can choose to connect with God as they start their workday."

Mr. Plummer closed his email saying "Thank you for the work you and your staff do. No way we could do this on our own." It is our hope that the Cultural Commentary would enable all of our readers to extend their ministry through ours. How can the Cultural Commentary become a ministry opportunity for you?

How has the Cultural Commentary inspired you to minister to others?
